  • Sperm Cryopreservation at the Time of Your Reversal

Sperm Cryopreservation at the Time of Your Reversal

Here at ICVR, we offer sperm banking, also called sperm cryopreservation, at no additional charge to all of our patients at the time of the vasectomy reversal.

We offer sperm cryopreservation at the time of your vasectomy reversal and the first year of sperm storage at no additional charge. Traditional sperm cryopreservation costs range from hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the laboratory performing the cryopreservation. Our mission at ICVR is that you never need to use your cryopreserved sperm to reach your fertility goals, but we encourage cryopreservation at the time of surgery to ensure we do not limit your future reproductive choices.

Our laboratory maintains the highest standard of care and good laboratory practice which includes infectious disease screening (IDS) at the time of cryopreservation. Our high standard of care ensures safe storage of patient samples and allows for sperm transport out of our facility if you should ever need to use your cryopreserved specimen or if you wish to store your specimen at another facility.

Our laboratory strives to exceed industry standards to ensure the highest quality of male reproductive and fertility care. Not everyone has sperm that can be cryopreserved at the time of surgery, as some patient’s sperm does not meet the minimum cryopreservation criteria. We will not cryopreserve a sample for you if we know it will be unusable in the future.

If your sperm meets minimum cryopreservation criteria, there are two sources of sperm for cryopreservation during your vasectomy reversal surgery which include:

    • Vas Deferens - Fluid from the vas deferens collected when a vas to vas connection is re-established.
    • Epididymis - Fluid from the epididymis collected when a vas to epididymal bypass is established.

Your sperm cryopreservation directive at the time of your reversal.

You will be asked to choose from the following options:
(Remember, not all patients have sperm that meets minimum cryopreservation criteria. We will do our best to cryopreserve sperm for you, but we cannot guarantee sperm cryopreservation at the time of surgery.)

    1. Cryopreserve sperm from vasal fluid and/or epididymal fluid whichever is surgically relevant based on the connection made. This selection will not result in a more surgically invasive option than necessary.
      • This means that you would like us to cryopreserve whatever we find during the normal course of surgery, with no additional measures taken to find sperm for cryopreservation.
    2. No sperm cryopreservation.
      • This means that even if the fluid meets the minimum cryopreservation criteria it will not be cryopreserved for your future use.

We understand there is a lot of information to consider and these cryopreservation decisions play an important role in your future fertility journey. We are here for you and want to support you along the way. If you have any questions, please call, or email us at info@dadsagain.com or call (520) 731-2705.
