  • Why Aftercare Is Essential After Your Vasectomy Reversal

Why Aftercare is Essential After Your Vasectomy Reversal

6 months of your post vas-reversal aftercare is included when you have your reversal done with us!

Vas Reversal Aftercare Shouldn't Be an After Thought

When you break a bone, you go to the doctor to get it set. But that isn’t the end of things. Then they put a cast on it and re-X-ray periodically to make sure it is healing correctly. If it is not, the doctor will have to reset the bone.

If you go home and immediately take off the cast, the bone may heal correctly but likely will not. Just putting the bone in the correct position is just the first step. The same is true following a vas reversal. Putting the tubes back together is just the FIRST step in a long journey. Following the evolving treatment plan ensures the swelling will subside correctly so the connections heal in the open in the correct position.

Just Because You Feel Fine, Doesn't Mean You are Done Healing or Swelling

Regular semen analyses are like the X-rays: they allow us to confirm that the connections are healing correctly, because if they are not then the treatment plan will need to be adjusted.

Just because you feel fine doesn’t mean you are done healing or that the swelling is completely gone. Whether the tubes are open fully or pinched shut you will feel the same. Just because your last semen analysis showed all numbers at pre-vasectomy levels doesn’t mean you are done healing. You could still get a flare-up of inflammation that could pinch on the tubes, and if undetected and thus untreated it could convert to scar tissue that could permanently obstruct the connections. Having good numbers today doesn’t guarantee good numbers tomorrow.

SURPRISE: Just Because She's Pregnant Doesn't Mean You're Done with Aftercare

Lastly, just because you have achieved pregnancy doesn’t mean you are done, for the same reasons listed above. Miscarriage is always a possibility (although likelihood decreases if she has had prior children, and after the first trimester) and so it is essential you continue adhering to the treatment plan at the very least until the baby is born. Just remember the broken bone and cast analogy. Just because you feel fine, are back to a pre-vasectomy fertility level, and/or are pregnant, doesn’t mean you are done. At ICVR we pride ourselves on our extensive aftercare and have found that patients who are compliant usually heal much better overall, with higher sperm numbers and faster time to pregnancy.

For many of our thousands of patients over the past 35 years, we have found that they have a much higher chance for success if they have frequent and regular semen analysis testing

    Why Semen Analysis Matters

Lengthy gaps before your first test or between tests can be fine if you are lucky enough to have no inflammation and blockage, but for many of our thousands of patients over the past 35 years, we have found that they have a much higher chance for success if they have more frequent and regular semen analysis testing. Home testing is designed not to replace formal lab testing, but rather supplement lab semen analysis testing. Even trained Andrology professionals with masters degrees, or PhD's using state of the art microscopes can sometimes have difficulty finding sperm. There is so much more to doing the same analysis and randomly putting a drop on a slide.

Why it is Game Changing in Your Fertility Path

For our patients there is 6 months of post op care included with your surgery cost! Our goal is not just to put the tubes back together, but to make sure they heal properly and see things through.

After your surgery we will be talking to you regularly as we monitor your healing and adjust the treatment plan as needed. If you are ever unsure of why you are being asked to do something, please don’t hesitate to call or email and one of our andrologists or nurses can explain the logic.
